A brief history of Harrisburg

Harrisburg is a town with pride in its past, confidence in its present and optimism about its future. Bordered by the beautiful Willamette River, the city of Harrisburg, Oregon is the home of 3,400 friendly citizens. Harrisburg is the perfect compromise between rural and urban America. Located near the I-5 corridor, it is approximately 25 miles from the larger cities of Eugene, Albany and Corvallis. An hour and a half to the north is the Portland metropolitan area, to the west is the amazing Oregon coast, and to the east is the recreational paradise known as the Cascade Mountains. Established as one of the first settlements in the Willamette valley, Harrisburg had achieved early prominence in the southern valley as a major stopping location of charm for traffic on the Willamette River. Many steamboats utilized Harrisburg as a frequent stay on their way to Eugene. Furthermore, Harrisburg was the southern finishing point of the shopping route. With the introduction of the railroad and highway systems, Harrisburg further enhanced its position as one of the centers for supplying agricultural products to the Southern Willamette Valley.
